Josh Lambert

Josh Lambert serves on the vestry at St. Andrew’s, and he is the one who built and tends this website. When football is on, he pulls for the Auburn Tigers and the Miami Dolphins. When it is off, the music is on: Dvořák above all, classical and alt-rock in steady rotation, and shape note singing from Alabama’s Sacred Harp tradition (Christian Harmony).

By trade, Josh builds things that are not supposed to still exist: small businesses, independent infrastructure, and the open web. From Centreville, his hometown in Bibb County, he runs three small companies, chief among them Alabama Lightwave, a wireless internet service provider (a WISP, in the trade) beaming broadband to homes the big carriers passed over. He is also the principal of Centreville Tech, maintains a couple of open-source projects, chairs a small open-source software foundation, and writes about rural broadband, the open web, and faith. He works from a desk in a small town on purpose, because he thinks the small town is the point, not the thing you are supposed to leave.

He and his wife Kylie found their way to the Episcopal Church during the pandemic and stayed. They are raising three sons, with a fourth boy on the way, and the whole crew lands in the pews on Sunday, fidgets and all. You will find him reading C.S. Lewis, N.T. Wright, Gary North, and Seth Godin, and he is drawn to the same hope this parish proclaims: that ordinary, durable, local work, done well, is part of how heaven and earth are being knit back together. Building a church website, it turns out, is not so far from building anything else worth keeping.
