Canterbury House

St. Andrew’s began operating Canterbury House in the 1960s as a way of caring for University of Montevallo students who needed safe and affordable housing. More than half a century later, that work continues, quietly and faithfully, one student at a time.

Off-campus housing, a block from campus

Canterbury House sits right next door to the church, a short walk from the University of Montevallo campus, and residency is open to all. There are six private rooms, with each bathroom shared between two residents. Downstairs you will find a common room with a kitchen, living room, and dining area, plus a washer and dryer, and resident parking is provided. Rent is $600 a month and covers utilities and internet. It is a real home, not just a place to sleep between classes.

More than a room

Living here also means belonging here. The Canterbury House Campus Ministry meets once a week for Chaplain’s Class, a time of teaching and conversation with our priest; we are planning on Sunday afternoons, and each fall the chaplain and residents settle the day and time together. Residents are also expected to serve at least two Sundays at St. Andrew’s, in roles ranging from reading the lessons as a lector or carrying the cross as crucifer to setting up the altar or helping serve Communion as a Lay Eucharistic Minister. You will not just live beside the church. You will be part of it.
